Film legend Charlton Heston dead at 84. Perhaps now we can pry the gun "from his cold dead hand".. .

LOS ANGELES - Charlton Heston, who won the 1959 best actor Oscar as the chariot-racing "Ben-Hur" and portrayed Moses, Michelangelo, El Cid and other heroic figures in movie epics of the '50s and '60s, has died. He was 84....

No doubt we'll soon be reading about his Brighton connections. I can't remember the name of the regular letter writer to the "Argus" whose frequent small biops of Hollywood stars appear on the letters pages. He's now moved to Lancing and I haven't had any contact with him since he left the Elm Drive locality --- anyway, this 'letter writer' in his younger days was a tennis coach and Charlton was one of his regulars whenever he was in England. He used to reminisce lots about Charlton ... no doubt his memories are being drafted for the "Argus" as I write this!

Can I be first with his Brighton connections. Many years ago (in 1985) my mum was going to her car in the car park behind the Theatre Royal when she saw a dirty old tramp having a pee in a corner. Disgusted, she hurried past but then the old tramp turned around and she saw it was a very drunk Charlton Heston.

I thought 'The Omega Man' was his best film.

He brought some great moments to the big screen. Shame about his politics. RIP!

I did enjoy his work. I think of him like Ronald Reagan, entertaining, but strictly an actor...toeing the mark and reciting the lines that writers provided. Both in film, and in politics.
