Starbucks group The Facebook group formed to oppose the opening of a Starbucks branch in St James's Street, Brighton, has now almost 800 members. Hundreds of letters objecting to the application submitted by Starbucks have been sent to Brighton and Hove City Council. There is still time before the deadline to write and explain why planning application number BH2008/01039 is a bad idea for St James's Street.
Our area already has over a dozen coffee shops and the lovely character of St James's Street, with its collection of independent bars, restaurants and cafés is under threat from multinational corporations that are trying to make all high streets in Britain look exactly alike.
This opening goes against the council's own local plan, the transition town commitment and the Spade and Spoon programme.
Join our group or contact the council with your objections and let's save the unique and wonderful character of our city.

And once the Evil Empire Starbucks is open - it will be like any other BLAND street.
Starbucks are BLAND and ideal for poor old BornInHove who is stuck out in the Middle East working in Education. |

Bland, like a high street with greggs on it, of which there are 100's?
There's a flaw to your logic, can you see it?
Can someone draw it with crayons so old shit for brains can understand? |

Greg's give %1 of their profits to good causes. In the north of england you are never more than 5 mins from gregs meaning sausge rolls and happy lunchtimes for all. |

The Evil Starbucks Sign is now up. It has a clear sign in the door window saying they have 24hour Security. |

Mim they don't give out credit, they do however accept credit. LTNS was suggesting we provide Boot with large financial loans so they can expand their empire.

| As LTNS is a major shareholder in Greggs, it is unlikely that he will diversify his portfolio to prop up Boots. |

In Jimmy Street? And wasn't it you complaining about the doctor not speaking English - even before the doctor was employed by all accounts |

Well, I spent about 14 hours in Starbucks this weekend, sad no-social-life that I am. Actually, it is one of the few places in town where I can sit, smoke, drink good coffee and not get disturbed while working through the huge pile of marking that needs doing every weekend. We're approaching the last month of the semester and things are getting frantic. Still, 'Hurrah!' for Starbucks for being there.
Bring on the one in St James' St. Decent coffee with decent service in a hygenic setting. I know it's a concept dear old LTNS can't get his head around, wedded as he is to inefficient service, indifferent products and dubious hygine, believing it adds 'character', but give me the reassurance of a Starbucks any day.
Bring it on. |

They are not needed since we have loads on St.James St as it is.

The planning process is still in the consultation phase, but they are already doing the work - either they are showing complete contempt for the planning process or they are very confident they will get planning permission - maybe they have a insider in their pocket (allegedly)

| Maybe they do have an insider in their pocket. Maybe they do not function. Some people may recall Tesco at Palmeira Square or even that illegal building near Norfolk Square on Western Road. |
