| Isn't that an infringement of privacy? Surely they cannot hold a database with details of individuals unless they have their consent. And if these are indeed minors how can they legally give their consent? |

Well they can keep CCTV footage without consent, but I would consider a database with Biometric information stored to be in a different league to this.
Obviously you know i'm invovled with NO2ID, and we will raise this with Privacy International, who I suspect will report Budgens to the ICO for breach of the Data Protection Act.
I've just written a letter of complaint to the company. |

| There is a big difference between CCTV footage where individuals are not identified and a database that depends on individuals being identified I would have thought. Also I think that there is a limit to the amount of time CCTV footage can be held by non public bodies. |

| Even the police will only keep cctv footage for three months (Unless said footage is required to prove a case etc etc,as told to my insurance company in"2000 after some asshole smashed my car by boundary road |

Dear x,
Thank you for your email.
As you may be aware, Budgens stores are owned and run by independent retailers. The facial recognition equipment recently installed in this Budgens store was in no way commissioned by Musgrave Retail Partners GB but was put into place by the owner of the store.
He has agreed to remove this equipment.
I hope that this will not deter you from shopping at other Budgens stores in the future.

Dear Sir/Madam
I’m writing to express the serious concern I have regarding the trial of recording people’s biometric information when they buy drink in your store. Many people will regard such an act as a serious breach of their personal privacy. There is nothing that this scheme does that couldn’t be performed by providing standard proof of age. I belive such a system would be illegal under the data protection act, and like BAA I suspect you will shortly be investigated by the ICO.
Just for considering this scheme I am now resolved to never step foot in a budgens again, further more I will inform as many people as possible about this scheme and advise them all to avoid your stores to prevent their facial biometric information being stolen from them.

| no one is reporting that Budgens have axed this trial apart from my blog.... Hopefully soon the BBC will run a follow-up story |

Yes they are a franchise so this was done by an indivdual retailer. So we are pleased that the firm that run's the Budgens' franchise have not agreed to this scheme and have moved to distance themselves from it.
They realize that their customers value their privacy and would keep away. |
