Are these people needed on a pedestrian crossing(eg Portland Road,West Way) or is it another way of wasting Council Tax?

| If it keeps the children safer then it is worth it. |

Considering they work at most 15 hours a week at minumum pay its not exactly expensive. Most of them would do it for free as well. One of the shit jobs I had was their supervisor for 3 months. You should go and stand there with them for a morning and see what a bunch of cunts some people become come when sat behind the wheel of a car.
I don't know if she is still there but a poor woman used to work the pelican crossing on Old Shoreham Road down in Hove, she used to risk her life stepping out in the road each day even when the signals were red! |

A male colleague of mine, on one of his short placements as a (`mature`)student nurse, was sent for a week to a local junior school. Dressed in mufti, and wearing an open coat and a hat, he turned up early, on foot, and then wasn`t sure which entrance to use, so he hung about, waiting to see someone who looked like a teacher arrive. There was a middle-aged lollipop lady across the road from where he waited, also early, but he thought she looked a bit hostile so he didn`t go and ask her, just waited instead for teachers to arrive, then followed them in and introduced himself. He saw the lollipop lady every day, and she nodded politely. Near the end of the week, she was quite friendly - and she told him that she`d spotted him that first morning, and had a detailed account of his appearance ready to give to police - even down to the TIE he was wearing! Dedicated to the safety of those kids, and ready to be as fierce to protect them as a mother rhino! Wonderful people, our lollipop ladies. Leave `em alone, they`re better value for money than a lot of folks our taxes go to paying. |

| Fluffy I couldn't agree more but the problem in Portland Road is that the patrol is on a self regulating zebra crossing with an island so you are not sure whether to stop or not. He would be more use in School road ouside the school where all manner of idiots park even on the pinch points. |

These people do an excellent job, AND, in all weathers. Not all the motoring public observe Zebra crossings so this is a back up for the increased safety of children.
Oh yes F1976, is such language ncessary on a public forum such as this? |
