I am surprised nobody has mentioned the ominous vote in the House of Commons on Friday last. It might appear just a 'national' issue, but my guess is it's the "writing on the wall" prefiguring what's in store in our world of increasing control from above. (The MPs voted to exempt themselves from Freedom of Information disclosures) With all its many faults the Freedom of Information Act 2000 was a valuable move towards openness and accountability; a case I took to F o I and received reply in February of this year, provided clear evidence of a local Council lying to electors. If the exemption to the House of Commons becomes law, inevitably the next step will be to move along the same road and extend the favour to local authorities, such as our Brighton & Hove Council. We are witnessing New Labour in action, in the very week Gordon Brown pretends he's introducing a new era of "openness".

For the record, for those who missed the news details, here is a listing of who voted how:

Why is anyone suprised by the fact some MP's want to fly below the radar of law they expect the rest of us to live by? Data Protection law already excludes correspondence with constituents so that excuse is a smokescreen for those with something to hide. It isn't suprising at all.

But it maybe worth taking note of the Ayes and Nayes. Des Turner, The MP for Kemptown, is an Aye

It appears only a small percentage of MPs voted.

Yes, an important point., Dave. News casts taken during the debate showed rows and rows of empty seats (i.e. rather typical of most of the time when our "leaders" are deliberating our destinies), but that nighton the news services,, I noticed the BBC provided shots of a "full house", with hordes of members pushing and shoving each other. I guess that's the BBCs cosmetic contribution to making it all appear "more democratic"!? All part of the overall "spin" which is now so basic to our Society!

Dave, yes this is one of the problems about legislation, it only takes a majority of those
voting in the house for a bill to pass the lower and upper houses.
Also, there is little opposition in this present parliament or they are not present.

Look at Paris
they lost control in those Riots a year back.

Control - no one can predict.

In a Civil War all those Computer HQ
could be destroyed in the UK.

This is getting more and more like a police state. In Stalin Russia neighbours were encouraged to 'rat' on their neighbours. In Hitler's Germany children were encouraged to 'rat' on their parents ...

The Assets Recovery Agency – which initially cost more to run than it recovered- are behind this.
Makes you wonder if anything at the home office is cost effective and does what it says on the tin!
