Why did Gordon Brown offer a cabinet post to a Lib Dem (Paddy Ashdown)?

Has this been done before (one party including a member of the opposition when there isn’t a hung Parliament)

Its probably been explained in the media but I’ve either missed it or glazed over before the details have been fully explained. I apologise if this is the case.

It just seems an odd move for Brown to make & its a kick in the nuts for his Labour colleague Peter Haine who currently holds the Northern Ireland portfolio. (How must he be feeling atm)

The NI job has often been seen in the past as a poison chalice so was the plan for Ashdown to possibly mess up & Brown to take a step back & point at the failings of the Lib Dems? I cant see it as the stakes are so high

I aint surprised PA turned it down though. I could see all the reasons that he would so why didn’t Brown, knowing full well that the story would find its way into the public domain sooner or later?

Massive own goal & he aint even got the No 10 swivel chair set at the right height yet.

Im not a 'finger on the pulse' follower of politics, just some busy bloke with certain opinions, some lefty, some righty so once again I’m sorry if its been explained a million times in the press & I’ve missed it.

Labour is short of the right material to promote, just yes men on the back benches.

Just a thought.

Brown knows that he will have tough time next election.
By getting Ashdown other Lib Dems may defect.
Labour may also attract Lib Dem voters which they may need.

We're all doomed!
Head for the hills before they start heading for you!
