Here is a misfortune at the London Eye.
If there is similar trouble at the Brighton one, will there also be these emergency commodes?
The article does not say if anybody used them and whether, if so, other passengers looked away - or, indeed, whether the contents were then tipped earthwards.

Building work is to begin finally
on the Brighton Eye over a year
late and after a succession of false starts.
It is about time since the base is a hard construction
and clear out.
With so many on hold
it makes a change.

| This is the last thing Brighton needs at the moment. Housing, a new leisure centre,(but not by Karis)yes but a donut on a stick. All that money spent and disruption so people can go up and down and look over the rooftops but it 'will put Brighton on the map'. Councillors can boast it's taller than that thing at Portsmouth. Credit crunch? |

Yes, it's a hotel with a big wheel in the middle - so you can get an endless parade of gawkers rotating past your hotel room window. |

But this is Brighton & Hove remember - 'The Place to be'. Just getting on and making improvements might be acceptable for other places but we're special aren't we? It could be if those in power and those hangers-on that sadly influence power took their collective heads out of the @rse's for a moment to see that basically, if it wasn't for our seafront (that isn't actually that great) we'd be nothing more than a Regency Croydon with poorer shopping facilities and lower wages.
This is unlikely to happen anytime soon however.
Back on topic, I'm still sceptical that this (i360) will ever be built despite news this week that building work is imminent. |

I'm sure if they conducted a straw-poll around the 'burbs and places like Peacehaven, Shoreham etc - all full of displaced Brightonians, they'd be a resounding call for facilities like a decent swimming pool to rival that in Burgess Hill or Crawley - not 'strings-of-pearls' along the seafront. At the end of the day, Brighton was a fishing village made fashionable by a King who liked to party to excess. Brighton still whores itself out to Londoners every weekend. Perhaps but while there is still some beach that meets the sea - the tourists will come, trash the town, spend money that will fill the pockets of a transient workforce and national (not local) companies and then bu@@er of again until next weekend / bank holiday.
A seafront on a sunny day can hide a multitude of sins - Brighton has always clung to this but over the last 10-15 years has seemingly fallen in love with soaking up its own self-produced hype.
Like Miriam says - all style, no substance. The substance lies in the sadly neglected suburbs. Who cares about them? They don't make a 'world class city' do they?

He’s none of these things and actually much more important than all of them. Peter Topping is a visitor from Surrey who came to the city on Sunday and had a good time. He had such a good time he took the trouble to write to The Argus about his visit and he reminds all those who spend too much time complaining about Brighton & Hove’s perceived shortcomings what a great place this is. |

I think the point however is this...
Brighton & Hove need tourists but some money should be spent on some decent facilities that local tax payers can benefit from all year round.
Martha Gunn is more than likely correct in saying a lot of Brightonians are now living on the outskirts.

Yes, he's had a nice day out by the sea but this isn't the everyday experience of Brighton is it? For those living & working here the reality is somewhat different and for those that move here they often enjoy a honeymoon period where the rose tinted specs make everything great.
It's that classic case of peering behind the wallpaper. The festival, beach, sunshine etc all do a great job of papering over the cracks but underneath we all know the unaddressed shortcomings that exist.
The council are too happy to accept statistics like the town being the drug-death capital of the UK as being a by-product of our 'vibrant' cafe, bar & club society.
Besides, he comes from Byfleet which is a suburb of Woking for goodness sake. Mosside would be a nice day out in comparison...

And he came down via Hove thanks to local knowledge. The intended route into brighton - the A23 - is now screwed. Had he been stuck in a jam from Patcham, his day out might not have been so great. |
